The newly updated Zapzapmath K6 App invites kids to use intuitive math skills to solve a variety of math puzzles and challenges in an outer space-themed digital environment. Kids create their own avatar, called a Mathling, to keep them engaged in the app through their own chosen character. The app has a user friendly interface that most kids (even K kids) can figure out on their own. Some of our younger K students needed initial direction, but after a few attempts they were able use the app independently. The games within the app each have 5 different levels which increase in difficulty as the kids master previous levels. The parent/teacher dashboard is invaluable as it provides insights into what games have been played, times, and accuracy for each child/student playing. While we have many math apps we use throughout the year, our kids LOVE the outer-space theme and they have mastered math concepts while having FUN playing.

We are champions of technology for learning when it is integrated into daily curriculum and used with age-appropriate educational intent. Integrating content from the app into daily math experiences can offer diversified math content to help meet the needs of each and every student. Download the free winter cocoa cups and marshmallows play dough counting mats (linked above) to practice one-to-one correspondence with your kids at home. Use the Zapzapath app during centers time to reinforce basic counting, number words, and number recognition skills (and SO MUCH MORE) while in the classroom, in childcare, at home, or even on-the-go. It’s a great app to use over the holidays to keep math skills current over winter break.
Print the play dough mats and laminate for durability (clear contact paper works well if laminating supplies aren’t readily available). Invite the children cut or pinch off small pieces of white play dough, roll into balls, and then place the play dough balls in the “marshmallow” circles. Learning to roll play dough is a great fine motor activity as kids learn basic one-to-one correspondence through play. Extension idea: Cut the individual cocoa cups apart and use the cups for basic addition or subtraction (example: for addition, have the children add together two cups using play dough “marshmallows” for counters and then write or stamp the sum of the two numbers on one of the blank cocoa cups (located on the last pages of the free mats linked above.)
