It’s almost August and millions of kids, teachers, and parents are preparing for back-to-school time. I’m an educator, but also a parent of six and a grandparent to five young girls. As a teacher, I strive to meet my students just where they are. Real connections with kids take time, energy, lots of patience, and great love. I’ve learned that passion and heartfelt care for kids go further toward real learning than any individual lesson I can offer as a teacher. Kids will strive to meet expectations when they feel understood, respected, loved, and cared for in their world.
As educators we need to know our kids stories to reach, and effectively teach, our kids well!
As a parent, I understand the challenges facing the youngest of my six kids as he prepares to enter middle school next month. He is courageously dealing with anxiety after the sudden death of his oldest sister 2 years ago. He is doing much better as he learns to recognize anxiety, but he has to implement practical tools when he finds anxiety rising. I’m so proud of his own resiliency and courage to deal with the sudden death of a sibling at such a young age. My heart of gratitude extends to the amazing teachers (and other adults) who have supported him in his efforts to continue to share his talents, love, and light with the world. He is my personal “Super Kid” and I’m honored to be a part of the Super Kids Movement!
