SIGHT WORDS by LITTLE SPELLER – This app for sight words is a no frills app, but it is one of the best for teaching sight words available. The app comes with with 5 levels that can be fully customized to your child’s needs. Via settings, parents or teachers can add words, pictures, and even audio to use different words than are given in the original lists. The children complete the sight word using “drag and drop” touch screen skills. The app allows for customization of letter order so that children can complete a sight word in a LEFT to RIGHT manner. Adults can also choose either lowercase or uppercase letters for the children to work on by adjusting the settings accordingly. It is a solid app for integrating technology into everyday literacy (and it’s FREE)!
Ready to Print by Essare – This app is developed by Diane Reid (an occupational therapist with 20+ yrs. of experience). It is a wonderful tool for parents and teachers to help prepare the foundations for writing. At $9.99, it may seem a little “pricey” for an app, but when compared to printing costs for concepts that need repetition, it is worth the money.
Ready to Print, introduces new concepts slowly and gives the children plenty of time to practice. All skills are given in a specific order for the children to develop visual and fine motor skills. Again, it is a solid app for teaching pre-writing skills and the foundations for letter formations.

One of our favorites, the ABC Pocket Phonics App, is first on the list! Click the picture above to view details for the app. There is a free trial iPhone version, too; download it and let your children try it out! It is a good one for touch screen writing and teaches LOWERCASE letters first. There is an explanation for teaching lowercase FIRST, if parents or teachers wish to read.
