Show the children the United States Flag and ask them if they know what it is? Tell the children it is the United States Flag and is a symbol for our Nation.  Tell them that every Country has a National Flag that stands for the people who belong to that Country.  Our Country is called:  The United States of America.

Flags for countries are rectangles made of cloth.  Our flag has seven red stripes, six white stripes, and 50 white stars.   The colors red, white, and blue are our National Colors.  The white stars stand for all of the 50 states that form our Country.  Show the children a map and ask them if they know what state they live in?  Find that state on the map as well as other states they may know.

Stars Patterning – Star Pattern Strips

Materials needed: star shaped punch or stickers, construction paper (if using a punch), blank pattern strip chart (page 3 of pdf link above), glue

Using a star shaped punch, cut out small star shapes out of red, white and blue construction paper.  Children can create and glue a pattern into the blank pattern strip chart (page 3).

If you do not have a star shaped punch, you can print off and cut apart the Star Pattern Strips.pdf.  Students can color in each star in the row to create a pattern (page 2).  For younger children: Children can extend a pattern that a teacher has started for them, and glue the stars onto the pattern strip.  For example, the teacher may begin gluing a red star, then a blue star, then glue a red star, then a blue star.  The child has to try and figure out what color comes next and continue the pattern on his/her own or with assistance.  If you do not have the star shaped punch, you can start to color in the stars to create and begin a pattern for the child to extend.
